Minimum Order Quantity for Custom Metal Crafts

Our standard minimum order quantity is 100 pieces per design. This baseline covers fixed setup costs like mold creation, which are distributed across the batch to keep unit prices viable.

For our standard custom metal craft processes, the typical minimum order quantity (MOQ) starts at 100 pieces per design. This baseline exists because metalworking involves fixed setup costs—such as mold creation, die stamping, or casting preparation—that must be distributed across enough units to make the unit price viable. While some suppliers may accept smaller runs by charging a separate one-time tooling fee, we set 100 pieces as the default threshold to balance production efficiency with cost control.

Why 100 Pieces Is Our Standard Baseline

Metal crafting differs from digital printing or simple assembly because it requires physical tooling. Whether you are ordering enamel pins, medals, or decorative charms, the factory must first create a mold or die specific to your design. This process takes time and material regardless of whether you order 10 items or 1,000. When an order reaches 100 pieces, the cost of this initial setup can be amortized into the unit price without causing a drastic markup. Below this number, the per-unit cost often spikes because the fixed tooling expense dominates the total bill. Consequently, we set 100 pieces as the default MOQ for standard processes to ensure that the production run remains economically sensible for both the buyer and the workshop.

Small Batch Orders and Tooling Fees

It is possible to order fewer than 100 pieces, but this usually changes the pricing structure rather than eliminating the setup cost. Some suppliers offer low-MOQ options, such as starting at 10 or 50 pieces, provided the customer pays a separate, non-refundable tooling fee upfront. In this scenario, the unit price might appear lower because the mold cost is isolated, but the total investment includes both the tooling charge and the production cost. This approach is common for organizations, schools, or clubs testing a new design before committing to a larger bulk order. However, not all factories accommodate this; many prefer to keep tooling costs embedded within the unit price of a standard 100-piece run to simplify accounting and reduce administrative overhead.

Factors That Influence MOQ Flexibility

The strictness of the 100-piece rule depends on the complexity of the item. Simple stamped metal tags or basic coins may have more flexible MOQs because their tooling is less expensive and quicker to produce. Conversely, intricate 3D castings or multi-layered enamel pieces require more precise molds and longer production cycles, making factories less willing to break down batches below the standard threshold. Additionally, the type of metal used can play a role; exotic alloys or materials requiring special handling might necessitate higher minimums to justify the setup of specialized equipment. Buyers should always clarify whether a quoted MOQ includes the tooling cost or if it is charged separately, as this distinction significantly impacts the final budget for small batch projects.
