Custom work organised around how you buy

For cultural institutions, souvenir brands, event organisers and corporate buyers — design impact, cost and delivery time balanced around the actual use.

The same metal product asks different things of us on a retail shelf, at a gifting occasion or on an awards stage. This page sets out how we work with five of the most common buying situations. Many categories in fact work across several of them — the grouping below simply picks out the most typical use.

Cultural institutions and museums

Cultural institutions and museums

Cultural souvenirs have to solve one problem: taking the landscape home. Building outlines, museum motifs and city symbols are drawn large on the artwork — whether they still hold up when reduced to a few centimetres of metal is the first question to answer.

We run through the drawing at actual size first: relief between 0.3 mm and 1.5 mm can carry levels, and pierced work below 0.8 mm has to be assessed. Density and colour are confirmed on a physical sample, not on screen.

Fridge magnets, bookmarks and badges are the most common items in this channel. Packaging can be specified separately for shelf and transport requirements, and before any batch ships we check it item by item against the approved sample.

Brands and gift distributors

Brands and gift distributors

A distributor's first order usually carries a test: can the design be matched, and will the lead time hold? We start from small batches of 100 pieces, so the risk on that first order stays manageable.

At the sampling stage, material, plating colour, fittings and packaging are all fixed in the approved sample. On repeat orders, production works from the first-article record rather than from memory — batch to batch there should be no colour shift and no surprises in the fittings.

Products that must come as a pair, such as cufflinks, are scheduled in the same production run. If keychains, tie clips and compact mirrors are ordered from the same factory, sampling and inspection stay on the same footing, which makes the conversation simpler.

Event and competition organisers

Event materials do not come with an option to deliver late; an awards day will not move for anyone. So we work backwards from the event date: artwork review, sampling, approval, production, shipping — where each of those falls, day by day, is spelled out first.

One to two rounds of sampling, with a standard production lead time of three to five weeks. Whether medals, commemorative pieces or brooches can carry the relief depth you want is assessed against quantity first, and we commit to the date after that assessment.

An event rarely needs only one category. When medals, badges and souvenirs sit on the same table, a consistent design language reads much better — which is something we take the initiative on in multi-category projects.

Automotive brand commemorative projects

Automotive brand commemorative projects

Projects of this kind are usually coordinated by a channel partner or an event agency, and we take part in delivery through that partner. They differ from a distributor's large order: a run may be only a few hundred pieces, but the events come one after another, so repeat orders are continuous. The hard part is not making the product — it is making the fifth batch look identical to the first.

Our approach is to put the first article on record: plating colour, lettering detail and assembly requirements all go into the production record, and every later batch is made against that first article rather than from memory. Projects that span six months and change batches still look the same.

The usual products are metal badges, commemorative plates and keychains. When a customer arrives with brand visual guidelines, we work to them and check colour and proportion closely at the sampling stage — this kind of project has little tolerance for detail, so anything that can be caught at sampling is not left to the production run.

Corporate and institutional purchasing

Corporate and institutional purchasing

Recognition medals, long-service awards, conference gifts, dealer thank-yous: what these occasions share is formality, and the products tend to be kept for a long time, so the quality cannot be rough.

We do not rush into making things. First the design and the occasion are confirmed, the specification is put in writing, and then production is scheduled. Items like badges are inspected piece by piece before the batch ships, so every one of them stands up to close inspection.

When budget or time is tight, we suggest concentrating the customisation where it counts: use standard processes for the body of the piece and save the special processes for the most visible part.

Starting a project

A drawing or reference image is the best starting point: send it with the expected quantity and the date you need, and we can give a reasonably reliable assessment. If the design is not complete yet, that is fine too — describe the use, the audience and the rough budget, and we will help work out the category and the process direction first.
